Sergio Ruzzier

We are truly delighted to host an interesting Italian illustrator: SERGIO RUZZIER

On Thursday, January 30 at 6pm, he will present his new book Bianca and the Butterfly in an exclusive preview event.

We love to describe Sergio through the words of a dear friend and colleague, with whom he shared a studio in Brooklyn for years, and who will also join us for the event: the wonderful Sophie Blackall!

Here’s what she writes:
This is Sergio: surprising, unconventional, funny, affectionate, generous, and fascinated by small and irregular things. […] Each book stands on its own, but the characters inhabit a similar universe. His illustrations are instantly recognizable for their candy-colored plateaus and hills, whitish cliffs, floating pink clouds, stick-like trees, and faceted stones; for the unearthly plants; and for the perfectly tiled geometric floors in empty rooms. […]

Sergio Ruzzier’s stories take place in a dreamy, timeless world—familiar and comforting, with hints of uncertainty. Behind that curvy hill, there might be a chasm. His protagonists, whatever their shape, are small children; like baby birds just out of the egg, they are vulnerable, demanding, contradictory, funny, melancholic, and incredibly tender. But whatever small trials they face, we know they will return home safe and sound, just in time for soup.
